A "Welcome" Gift to King’s Mill’s Chemotherapy Department
News 1

The Amazons Breast Cancer Support Group presented 5 Alaris pumps to King’s Mill’s Welcome Treatment Centre. The Staff of the Chemotherapy Department requested the equipment after discussions with the Breast Care Specialist Nurses, Linda Salmon, Gill Clark and Ailsa Rodgers, about their needs and how The Amazons could help. The pumps are used to deliver chemotherapy drugs to breast cancer patients and other cancer patients using the Welcome treatment Centre and cost £15,750 from the charity’s funds, raised by local people for the benefit of local patients. Pictured left to right, in white, are Suzanne Corney, of The Welcome Treatment Centre, and Breast Care Specialist Nurse Linda Salmon, receiving the Alaris pumps from Amazon Chairperson Beryl Perrin. Also pictured are Welcome Treatment Centre Staff, Amazon Committee Members and fund-raisers Julie Marriott and John and Margaret Yeoman.

Thank You From The Chair
News 9

Hi there to all our supporters, readers and friends. It’s time again for the annual newsletter to keep you updated on The Amazon’s activities. Our fine hospital is complete and the Breast Care Staff are now enjoying being well integrated into their comfortable, modern surroundings. Moving into the new Amazon Lounge made us want to give the “old look” a face lift and has prompted a revamp of the furnishings. We hope the “new look” will make the Lounge more attractive for the people it serves. We’re very proud to see the name of The Amazon Lounge so prominently displayed enabling patients to find us more easily. Recognition at last! We’ve had a busy year fund-raising, promoting breast care awareness and reviewing spending needs and, since the last newsletter, expenditure has been approximately £18,000, spent for the benefit of local cancer patients at King’s Mill. It’s thanks to YOU who support, donate and fund-raise that the Amazons can, with the advice of the Breast Care Professionals at King’s Mill, give extra help at our local level. The Committee and I cannot express our gratitude enough to you all. This year some of our support has come from small businesses, local organisations, families, schools, police and many, many caring individuals who have made donations of money and their time. Julie Marriott and the people of Huthwaite are examples of our regular supporters and the results of their extra-ordinary contributions of time, effort and generosity can be seen on this page!

THANK-YOU ALL! ! !

With your support we will continue to work for local breast cancer patients and carers at King’s Mill. Bless you all, Beryl Perrin (Amazon Chairperson).

Manufacturing a Make-Over
News 10

News 11

It is about 14 years ago that, with the help of a donation from the local Freemasons, the Amazons were able to furnish and create The Amazon Lounge within King’s Mill Hospital. We’re now to be found in the hospital’s new Pink Tower and the lounge needed some up-dating. It’s used by The Amazons for its monthly Open Meetings with breast cancer patients and carers and by the hospital’s Specialist Nurses and Surgeons as a more informal setting for some discussions and consultations. Amazon Committee members Janet and Geoff Stafford under took the make-over and pictured above is Geoff doing some D.I.Y. furniture construction. The refurbishment was funded by another recent donation from the Sutton Freemasons Non-Masonic Charities. (Pictured are Freemasons Gordon Beastall and Richard Cantrill presenting the £500 donation to Amazon Chairperson, Beryl.)

An Evening With Treats
News 5

The Ladies’ Evening organised by Pam Clarke and held at Stanton Hill’s All Saints Church was certainly an evening full of treats. There were treats to sample - wine, soft drinks, chocolates and strawberries. There were treats to experience - aromatherapy hand massage, sharing poetry and “things that were special” and, as pictured above, making badges in assorted shades of pink. People spent generously on the two raffles, the prizes having been donated by local businesses and friends. The evening was kindly sponsored by Stanton Hill’s “Vine Tree Charity Shop” and ladies from the local Churches were there to help. We were treated to a super evening and it raised a fantastic £1,020 for the Amazons and local breast cancer patients.

Pictured right are Amazons Janet, Keith and Liz who were taking the punters’ money on the Tote while compere Terry Wiseman explained more about the horses’ form. Waiting for the results of the photo-finishes was enough to make your hair stand on end (just look at Chris, pictured with Helen)! Liz organised the event which included a pie, pea and chips supper and Raffle. Thank-you to the Staff working at the Social Club, to the people who sponsored the races, “bought” the horses, gave raffle prizes and supported the event in any way. Julie Marriott started her fantastic fund-raising year at Huthwaite’s Victoria Club. She organised “A Breast Cancer Charity Day” with a bouncy castle for the children, chest-waxing for the men, a tombola and numerous stalls selling cakes, bric-a-brac and books and chances to “guess the weight”.
